Vitamin C Stars in Asthma

Parents of children with asthma are usually willing to do just about anything to help their children avoid asthma attacks. There are easy fixes that may help asthma symptoms.

According to a recent study, younger children with mild asthma who come from homes that aren't moldy or damp receive the most airway benefits from vitamin C.

Try a Vitamin C supplement for your asthmatic child.

Al-Biltagi, M.D. from the Tanta University in Egypt and Harri Hemila, M.D., from the University of Helsinki, Finland report that this study lends strong evidence that vitamin C is important for asthmatic children.

They also recommend further study to pinpoint exactly which demographics will benefit the most from vitamin C supplementation.

The study included 60 children, ages 7 to 10 years of age, with asthma. All were given 0.2 grams of vitamin C daily. The children who were 7 and 8 years old without exposure to molds or dampness in the home had their forced expiratory volume per one second (FEV1; a measure of lung function) improve by 37 percent with the vitamin C.

The children older than 8 years of age who were exposed to molds or dampness in their homes had their FEV1 level increased by vitamin C by a smaller 21 percent.

Younger children with mild asthma benefited the most from vitamin C supplementation.

This study is published in Clinical and Translational Allergy.
