Respiratory

Overview

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long-term lung condition that blocks airflow and makes breathing difficult. It usually develops after years of breathing in irritants — most often cigarette smoke. While there is no cure, inhalers, quitting smoking, and pulmonary therapy can help you breathe easier.

Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath, especially with activity
  • A cough that brings up mucus
  • Wheezing
  • Frequent chest infections

Causes & risk factors

Smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Long-term exposure to air pollution, dust, or fumes also raises the risk.

When to get help

See your doctor if you have a cough that will not go away or get short of breath doing everyday tasks. Ask your pharmacist about quit-smoking support.
